Mission and Strategic Plan

This toolkit originates from the Health Sciences Information Consortium and is in the process of being adapted and updated by the CHLA/ABSC Standards Standing Committee.

A mission is the library’s overall purpose and what it hopes to achieve. It is often included as part of an MVV statement – the mission, vision (where the library is headed), and values (predefined core principles) of the library.

The library’s goals and objectives should be in line with that of the broader organization of which it is part. Some libraries may choose to define a library-specific MVV statement or strategic plan. This plan should be a constantly referenced framework to align and define the library’s services.

Strategic planning uses the mission, vision and values of the library or the broader organization to guide the library’s activities and resource allocation in order to accomplish particular objectives.
